The Nottinghamshire village of Bleasby is just 24 kilometres from Nottingham and has a population of barely 800. It has a rich history and was recorded in a Saxon charter of 956, although in those days it was known as Blisetune. The village, made famous as the place where William Booth, the founder of the Salvation Army, grew up, held its own race meeting in the late 1800s. The meetings were organised by the Bleasby Hunt group and were staged at Hazleford, beginning on Monday 22nd September 1884. The races were popular, with attendances boosted by excursions by the Midland Railway Company from Nottingham, Derby and Leicester. The final meeting was staged on Monday 6th May 1889, although point to point meetings were still a feature after this meeting.
